The Mod Scene (1962-1968)

Este álbum com 25 músicas é muito mais do que somente uma excursão aos extensos domínios da inglesa Decca Records' vaults - é também, de fato, uma viagem pela playlist dos clubes Mods mais apreciados da Inglaterra da metade pro fim dos anos 60; dificilmente uma música dessa coleção já chegou perto de figurar em alguma parada musical, isso no Reino Unido (muito menos do que nos EUA), mas muito do que está aqui foi selecionado localmente em Londres dentre os mods que foram a audiência da maioria dessas bandas.

This 25-song CD is much more than just an excursion into the farther reaches of English Decca Records' vaults — it's also a de facto tour of the playlists of some of England's hottest mod clubs of the mid-/late '60s; hardly a sound on this collection ever made it anywhere near a chart listing, anywhere in the U.K. (much less the U.S.A.), but a lot of what is here did get picked up locally in London among the mods that made up the audiences of most of these bands.
Considering how badly England's Decca Records fared in the middle-late 1960's (apart from the Rolling Stones, the Small Faces, and the Moody Blues) in signing really solid acts, this is an astonishingly good collection of soul-influenced, mod-oriented singles from the company's vaults.
A few of the acts included, such as the Small Faces, Tom Jones, St. Louis Union, Chris Farlowe, and the Amen Corner, made some kind of splash on the charts, but most of the musicians here got their chance on these single sides, failed to find success, and disappeared into the mist of musical history.

The CD jumps headfirst into the kind of hard-rocking, intense soul numbers that were played to death in London' mod clubs, even if they never scraped even the lower reaches of the charts. The sound on these singles tells you right away why most of these groups were never going to make it as world-class recording acts, being too raw and direct — without the distinctive hooks to get more than a listen from any radio deejays. By themselves, the Ronnie Jones track, coupled with those by Tom Jones, Steve Aldo, Graham Gouldman, Poets, the Eyes of Blue, and the Quik, justify the cost of this $20 import.

The sound is excellent throughout, and it's also reassuring on some level to learn from the notes that Decca is digging so deeply into its vaults that these acts are nearly as obscure to the people producing this compilation as they are to us.

The Faces foi uma banda de rock do início dos anos 70 formada em 1969 do que restou do então Small Faces, depois que Steve Marriott deixou-os para formar a Humble Pie; os novos integrantes Ron Wood (guitarra) e Rod Stewart (vocais) juntaram-se à Ronnie Lane (baixo), Ian McLagan (tecladoo) e Kenney Jones (bateria).

Faces were an early 1970s rock band formed in 1969 from the ashes of The Small Faces after Steve Marriott left to form Humble Pie; new members Ron Wood (guitar) and Rod Stewart (vocals) (both from The Jeff Beck Group) joined Ronnie Lane (bass), Ian McLagan (keyboards) and Kenny Jones, (drums).

The Kinks - Arthur - Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire (1969)

The Kinks, foi uma banda de rock britânica formada em Londres em 1963 por Dave Davies e Peter Quaife.

A formação original era composta por Dave Davies (guitarra guia, vocais, composições), Ray Davies (compositor principal, guitarrista principal, guitarra rítmica), Pete Quaife (baixo, vocais) e Mick Avory (bateria).

Embora não tenham sido inovadores como os Beatles ou populares como os Rolling Stones, os Kinks foi a mais influente banda da Invasão Britânica e provavelmente a mais representativa do movimento Mod juntamente com o The Who. Durante sua carreira o grupo se tornou infame por seus conflitos, tanto públicos quanto privados, particularmente entre os irmãos Ray e Dave, que frequentemente degringolavam em agressões.

Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) is a concept album by British rock band The Kinks, released in late 1969. The album followed a rough period for the band, with the commercial failure of the critically acclaimed concept album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, its follow up single "Plastic Man", and the departure of founding member Pete Quaife. Songwriter Ray Davies constructed the album as the soundtrack to a planned television play, which was never produced but whose storyline had been developed in collaboration with Julian Mitchell. The story is based on Davies' brother-in-law Arthur, who emigrated from England to Australia with his wife Rose in the early 1960's.

The lead character Arthur is a carpet layer, and he and his family's plight in the opportunity-poor setting of post-war England is depicted. The songs describe the England that Arthur once knew, the promise of life in Australia for one of his sons, the emptiness of his superficially comfortable life in his home "Shangri-La", the resolve of the British people in World War II and the death of his brother in World War I, among other things.

Brian Auger - The Mod Years (1965-1969)

Se souberem ler inglês parabéns pois não achei a biografia do cara em portugês. Mas se ele fez um álbum desse e ainda conhecia o Eric Burdon só posso pedir que puxem!

Brian Auger, born on July 18, 1939 in Bihar, India, is a jazz and rock keyboardist, who has specialised in playing the Hammond Organ. He is considered to be one of the most influential keyboardists of all time. His mentor was famous organist Jimmy Smith.

In 1965 he founded the group Steampacket along with Julie Driscoll, Rod Stewart and Long John Baldry. With Driscoll and the band Trinity he went on to produce several hit singles, notably a cover of David Ackles' Road to Cairo and This Wheel's on Fire, a Bob Dylan song. In the 70s his star began to fade slowly, as he was working on several unsuccessful projects. Modestly successful albums he recorded with blues rock greats like Eric Burdon in the 80s at least showed that he is still an artist to be reckoned with.

The Jam - In The City (1977)

The Jam foi uma banda de rock britânica formada em 1976 por Bruce Foxton (baixo), Steve Brookes (guitarra), Rick Buckler (bateria) e Paul Weller (vocais).

Logo no início Brookes saiu da banda, que começou a se apresentar nos arredores de Londres. Em 1977 o Jam assinou um contrato com a Polydor Records e lançou seu primeiro compacto, "In The City", seguido por um álbum homônimo, que misturava influências mod e punk com as composições de Weller e versões de clássicos do R&B.

O Jam não conseguiu muito sucesso nos Estados Unidos, embora fossem superastros em sua terra natal, especialmente depois de tocar no Reading Festival em 1978. Paul Weller decidiu acabar com a banda no final de 1982, enquanto ainda estavam no auge da popularidade.
