The Zombies - Singles Collection 1964 - 1969
Recorded between 1964 & 1969. The Zombies found chart fame in 1964 with their very first single, "She's Not There," and went on to influence countless groups on both sides of the Atlantic. Fronted by ace keyboard player Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone, a singer with a breathy voice guaranteed to make the little girls swoon, St Alban's finest played a brand of intelligent pop music (how the press loved their 50 O-levels!). Essentially a singles band, the Zombies consistently issued quality pop sides that, although they may not have set the charts alight, were certainly testament to the musicianship and vocal talent within the group. This complete collection of Zombies' singles is presented in the original mono for reasons of authenticity (later stereo mixes lacking essential overdubs were created without the group's input). "She Does Everything for Me" and "Just Out of Reach," its flashy organ solo worthy of Alan Price, show the Zombies at their upbeat best. The fragile "The Way I Feel Inside" is the pick of their sensitive side. File ODESSEY AND ORACLE's magnificent opener "Care of Cell 44" under "Singles That Should Have Made It." The same goes for most of this fine collection.
compilation features both sides of all 14 Zombies singles from 1964-69, inc. "She's Not There," "Tell Her No," "Beechwood Park," "Time Of The Season" & "I'll Call You Mine"

The Kinks
The Kinks - BBC Sessions (1964-1977)
This two-CD compilation collects the bulk of The Kinks' truly live performances for the BBC between 1964-77; although many more songs were aired, these were usually the studio records with maybe re-recorded vocals. The years covered span the peak of their career from an artistic point of view, and most of their big hits from the time (sans the 1966 singles and "Lola") appear here along with quality album cuts and several unreleased tracks. Although about 90% of the songs here are five-star classics, the performances on disc one stick largely to the studio originals (perhaps a bit rougher, with a bit more of a "band" feel). It is on disc two where the true finds lie: the band's mid-70s period is represented by two 1974 shows which surpass their other 70s live document "Everybody's In Showbiz"; excellent versions of "Victoria", "Here Comes Yet Another Day", "Skin And Bone" (much lengthier) and "Celluloid Heroes" sound much punchier and energetic than the originals. The sound quality on everything is startingly clear, even on the '64-'65 cuts. There are also a couple of tracks, like "Good Luck Charm" and "When I Turn Out The Living Room Light", which have never seen official release by the group. As a crucial missing link in their catalogue, this long overdue compilation is absolutely essential for Kinks fanatics, while the track selection and quality of performances even makes it a good intro to the group for beginners (this would otherwise be a five-star review, were it not for the slightly unadventurous performances on disc one). God save The Kinks.

The Jam
The Jam - All Mod Cons (1978)
All mod cons is wellers dive into manhood and away from the jams early sound. Its more polished but not in a bad way. This is where the modfather would begin to prove his weight in gold- the songwriting is fantastic for someone so young and would continue for years to come. The anger is now laced under character studies ala Ray davies- the rickenbacker not only barks but weaves great double tracked lines- great use of reverse guitar in "in the crowd" This is the start of a great set of albums- Setting Sons- Sound Affects and the final offering of the Gift. All these albums should be in your collection- the Jam were the only band to give the clash a run for its money( the jam were more popular in the uk) and over the long haul weller has proved to be the class of 77's greatest songwriter. Among the best albums of the 70's!!

Eric Burdon and The New Animals - Eric is Here (1967)
Reviewer: brian smallwood (joliet, IL. United States) - from amazon.com
Eric is Here is a great album. I bought this album a while ago and put it on the the other day and I was blown away and extremely moved. Highly underrated and rarely heard this CD is know as being an oddity in Eric's vast and varied catalogue. W/ The Animals the music was bluesy r&b (some of the best by not only the British Invasion Groups but of all time) As Eric Burdon and the Animals (different group) it was amazing psycedelica esp. on Winds of Change. This album came in between both of those incarnations. And has aged very well by these ears. It is representive of what was going on at the time. The songs are jazzy, orchestrated pop that contains influence from the Beach Boys primarily Pet Sounds. It also has a soul/ Motown feel to it with a touch of Otis Redding and country Jerry Lee Lewis. Eric's vocals are very impassioned and he sings with conviction in interepting these songs like Billie Holiday (one of his idols) and Frank Sinatra.
1. In The Night sets the mood of the album. It has a dark and dreamy sound to it. All these tracks are great really so out of 10 this song is a 9.
2. Mama Told Me Not To Come is the song made famous by Three Dog Night. The intro is very Baroque like and totally turns swampy. It may not be as definitive as TDN's version but Eric does a great job interpreting. I would rate 8 of 10.
3. I Think It's Going To Rain is a sad song about lost love which most of this album is. Making that the common theme. Darkness, love (mostly lost), and Redemption. Definitly 9 out of 10.
4. On This Side Of Goodbye is another song about lost love. Again, 9 out of 10.
5. That Ain't Where It's At is one of the more known songs of this album. And justifibly so. It is one of the best tracks and most up tempo. Contains some real anger. While not an all time favorite for me, it is catchy so 10 out of 10.
6. True Love (Comes Only Once In A Lifetime)is really the turning point for me on this album. It is definitly one of three or four standout tracks for me. It has an oriental sound to it at the beginning w/ female background vocalists kinda like the Ronettes (which I admit is a stretch but I can't think of any other way to descibe it) making it weird and exhilerating at the same time. Eric vocals on this song are simply astounding! The raw emotion of hurt and love he conveys especially at the end! What a powerful track! This is the song that really sold me this album. A very high 10 out of 10.
7. Help Me Girl is probably the most famous song from this set but to me it is a 9 out of 10. It is a great song but not as emotion as some of the best moments on here.
8. Wait Til Next Year is the weakest song on the album. The way Eric interprets the words are right on but just don't correspond well with the music. Making this the least memorable of any of the songs on the set. A 6 out of 10.
9. Losin' Control is a good song not great but the urgency of the music and way Eric sings make it still a worthwile track. 8 out of 10.
10. It's Not Easy is quite simply a catchy, amazing song. This is definitly another highlight on this album. Absolutely essential, another 10 out of 10. Songs 10 - 12 are a great triple shot to end the album.
11. The Biggest Bundle Of Them All is very Motownish. Definitly one of the better tracks. 9 out of 10.
12. It's Been A Long Time Comin' begins w/ a crack from a snare drum and establishes the climax of this album. This is absolutly a highpoint and may be the best song on this album w/ tracks 10 and 6. This song is soulful! It has an Otis Redding feel. The perfect ending to a great album. 10 out of 10.
I hope this review has been very helpful and persuades you to invest in buying this wonderful album. It is well worth the time and money. Thank you.

The Who - The BBC Sessions [LIVE].part2
One of the most creative and explosive bands of the '60s, the Who didn't record an official live album until 1970. For fans of the revved-up, introspective, and humorous fare that made records such as My Generation, Sell Out, and A Quick One instant classics, 1970 was a good three years too late. Rather than referring to sometimes-dodgy bootlegs to discover what "Pictures of Lily," "Disguises," or "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" sounded like live, we are now presented with a surprisingly clear document of the band at--arguably--their peak. The CD, culled from archival live-in-the-studio radio broadcasts made between '65 and '73, keeps all the radio-announcer introductions and short interview segments intact, with a few bonus, real-life Sell Out jingles for good effect. A fabulous portrait of the artists as a young band, the disc brims with minor revelations--chief among them that they were pretty sorry as an R&B outfit and that (surprise) with Moon, Entwhistle, and Townshend bashing about, even a midtempo number like "Happy Jack" was a total scorcher live. --Mike McGonigal
